Philips Norelco OneBlade Review

The Philips OneBlade, you get a high-quality wet and dry shaver that does its job well for relatively low acquisition costs. The compact design and size in particular enable the Philips OneBlade to be handled very well. The small and narrow cutting edge of the blades helps to cut very accurate contours and there are no limits when trimming a longer beard.

The Philips OneBlade did a good job of both wet and dry shaving. However, you should be aware that the skin is not 100 percent smooth and the razor cannot keep up with the classic wet shave (but it comes very close!). However, where the razor has significant problems is with very hard beard hair. Here, one of our test subjects really had to struggle with the shaver and the whiskers kept getting stuck in the device when shaving, which led to severe tugging and skin irritation – no pre-treatment or shaving foam helped here either.

However, if you have normal or soft beard hair, you don’t need to worry about this – the shave worked very well there and was surprisingly gentle on the skin. It is important that you get used to the blade and always shave against the direction of growth. Once you get the hang of it, the result will be good, although you have to shave more often in some difficult areas. We had the impression that the dry shave worked a little better than with shaving foam. The razor is cleaned simply under running water, which is also really practical.

As for the accessories, we particularly like the trimmer attachment on the Pro models. This can be variably adjusted via a wheel and even a short 3-day beard is no problem. The body shaving attachments are not really necessary in our opinion. If you are careful when shaving, you can get along well without the attachment.

A shortcoming of the Philips OneBlade is the relatively high cost of replacement blades. In our test, these lasted about a little over 3 months. Since the package consisting of 2 blades costs around 20 euros, you should consider this before buying.

If you choose a Philips OneBlade, we recommend the cheaper Pro version. Here you get a much better battery compared to the slightly cheaper versions and the trim attachment for only 50 euros. Since the actual cost factor is the replacement blades anyway, it is better to spend a little more when purchasing the razor.

All in all, we can recommend the Philips OneBlade shaver. We particularly like the variable use of body shaving, beard trimming, wet and dry shaving.

I find this variability of choice to be a considerable advantage, as it offers the opportunity to achieve numerous effects, from a traditional shave to a scruffy beard look, using a single device.

The double-cutting direction is always guaranteed to have excellent visibility during finishing, ensuring maximum protection in particularly delicate areas of the face, especially those with delicate and irritated skin.

The counter grain allows you to accurately shave beards of various lengths, simply and smoothly.
In addition, thanks to Contourn Following technology, the blades follow the contours of the face to refine each part of it.

The rechargeable Li-lon battery has an autonomy of one hour of continuous use with a charge of only sixty minutes.

The blades of this knife are endowed with considerable strength and are considered ideal for long-lasting performance while maintaining all of its functional characteristics.

Compared to the One Blade model, this One Blade PRO has a more solid and resistant appearance, it is equipped with a charging base where the shaver is housed, even if the price has almost doubled.

As for the previous version, this model is also not suitable for those with a very long beard, or for those who love styles that differ from normality, such as long handlebar mustaches or wide sideburns.

I personally find OneBlade PRO to be very useful for those who feel the need for quick little touches, who don’t have much time to shave, in short, for those who don’t consider shaving a real ritual.

Philips OneBlade and OneBlade Pro – Special Features

In some points, however, OneBlade and OneBlade Pro differ from typical trimmers and that makes the devices interesting:

The shaving head has a very finely serrated blade on both long sides (3 cm). This allows you to move the device up and down when trimming, which makes handling easier.

The shaving head is not only small, but also extremely thin. As a result, it does not obscure the view and hard-to-reach places are easy to reach.

The two longitudinal blades are extremely finely serrated and, according to Philips, move back and forth 200 times per second. Although fine blades do not capture as many hairs in one go, the skin does not get between the teeth as quickly. We have never injured ourselves with the two OneBlade models in areas with robust, tight skin (e.g. cheeks, chest, arms, legs), even without a comb attachment. However, cuts are possible without and theoretically also with a protective comb on thin, sensitive, flabby skin (eg genitals).

The fine blades cut closer to the skin than any other trimmer we have tested (approx. 0.1mm cutting length), but not quite as close as good electric razors. A very smooth shave is therefore not possible, but the skin is protected and, in our experience, the skin tolerance is very good if the blades are disinfected regularly.

The blades have to be changed after about 4 weeks if they are used regularly. An indicator on the blade shows this. This results in higher follow-up costs than with other trimmers, which on average need new blades every two years.

Philips OneBlade vs OneBlade Pro: The Differences

The possible length settings of the OneBlade and OneBlade Pro models are different. The cheaper OneBlade version has 4 different trimming attachments that allow cutting lengths from one to five millimeters (1,2,3 & 5mm).

The OneBlade Pro QP6510/30, on the other hand, has a precision comb with 12 length settings between 0.5 – 9mm, while the QP6520/30 allows a full 14 settings (0.4-10mm).

In addition, the two OneBlade Pro variants have an LED digital display for the current charge level as well as for showing a warning when the charge level is low and for the charge level. The OneBlade also has these displays, but not as an LED display.

The OneBlade Pro versions differ in one fine detail: while the QP6510/30 only shows the charge level with 3 dashes, the QP6520/30 shows the full charge level in %.

I discovered important features in which the OneBlade differs from the OneBlade Pro, especially in the load time. The OneBlade models take around four hours to fully charge from an empty battery level, while OneBlade Pro models are fully charged after one hour.

As just mentioned, the QP6520/30 has a higher battery capacity and can be used for up to 90 minutes without having to be charged in between. That would also be disadvantageous because this Pro model can only be charged via a stand charging station. If the battery runs out while shaving, the shave is definitely over. Bad if you’re late for work anyway.

The OneBlade and OneBlade Pro 6510/30, on the other hand, charge with a power cord. If the battery is empty, simply plug in the plug and you can stop shaving without any problems. At this point, your personal preferences clearly decide.

Another difference can be found in the maximum power consumption. Here the OneBlade Pro with 5.4 watts is significantly higher than the OneBlade with 2 watts.

The basic version of the Philips OneBlade comes with a spare blade. A package with 2 replacement blades can also be ordered. With the Pro versions, the replacement blades are not included in the scope of delivery. You should therefore pay attention to the scope of delivery when buying and also select any replacement blades.

Similarities between Philips OneBlade and OneBlade Pro

It should be mentioned in advance that both Philips shaver models can be used for wet and dry shaving. In addition, they are multifunctional. You can shave, trim and style beard growth safely in the shower.

The OneBlade is a razor that does not replace a wet razor like a Philips One Way disposable razor. If you prefer a close and smooth shave for everyday use, you have to choose another model, such as a Gillette Oneblade. Because the Oneblade is designed to trim long beard hair so that beard wearers can style their facial hair.

Philips OneBlade to trim beard:

The best results for a well-groomed beard are obtained with the following steps with the Oneblade razor:

• Step 1: Clean the face skin and beard and dry it lightly.
• Step 2: Apply your shaving gel or your shaving foam and massage it in. For a dry shave, skip this step and go to step 3.
